John McCain thanked Senator Burns, stating, "Conrad served his country in the United States Marine Corps, and was a dedicated representative of the people of Montana for more than two decades. I am humbled by his support."

Conrad Burns was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1988, he was reelected in 1994, and again in 2000. Senator Burns was born in Gallatin, Missouri where he attended the Gallatin public schools and went on to attend the University of Missouri. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957. As a senator he served on the Senate Committee on Appropriations; Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
